Quick overview
Zinfandel (from California) and Primitivo (from Italy) grapes are the same. They both produce wines which are rich, full-bodied and high in alcohol and are often quite tannic. The grape has flavours of black and dried fruit and sweet spices.
On the grapevine...
Primitivo is one of Southern Italy’s popular grape varieties. The grape found its way to the United States in the mid-19th century, where it became known as "Zinfandel". The grape also produces a rose wine which is semi sweet.

More about the grape...
The grape is often matured in oak, which softens the tannins. If it is grown in the US, most notably California, it will produce a more fruity wine, with more body and alcohol and possibly lower tannins.
Conversely if it’s grown in Italy it’s likely to be more tannic, which bottle and barrel ageing will help soften – so if you’re not a fan of tannins go for an early vintage – 5+ years.
Random information...
There have been long-running debates about the variety's geographical origins – whether it’s Italy, the US or Croatia and it's still not been confirmed!
Primitivo translates as ‘early one’ which might well be a reference to the fact that it ripens quite early in the growing season.
